Your Yogi Note: The Three Energies Shaping Your Day (Even If You’ve Never Heard of Them) 🌿

“As we grow in awareness, we grow in choice. And that’s where the magic lives.” - Anon

Happy Wednesday ☺️ only a couple more days until the long weekend, yahoooo!

Let's talk energies, so you can make the most out of your mini break (if you get one that is).

Ever had one of those days where you feel totally inspired, clear-headed, and on top of the world… followed by another where you can barely peel yourself off the couch or everything feels just a little chaotic?

🖐️Me. All. The. Time!!!!!

According to yogic philosophy, what we’re feeling might be more than just mood or circumstance. It might be the Gunas at play.

Let me introduce you to these three timeless characters:

  • Sattva – the energy of clarity, balance, harmony, and light
  • Rajas – the energy of movement, ambition, action, and restlessness
  • Tamas – the energy of heaviness, inertia, darkness, and stagnation

The Gunas are said to be the three fundamental forces of nature, present in everything, including us. They’re not good or bad, they’re just there, influencing how we think, move, feel, eat, speak, and respond to life.

And the dance between them? That’s where our yoga begins. 😉

How They Show Up in Daily Life

On a practical level:

  • When you feel calm, centred, and clear-headed during a meditation or after a nourishing yoga class, that’s Sattva. (Balance)
  • When you’re in go-mode, checking things off your list, maybe even feeling a little impatient or buzzy, that’s Rajas. (Movement)
  • And when you’re slumped on the couch in your trackies, binge-watching shows and wondering where your motivation went, that’s Tamas. (Stagnation)

We all move through these states, sometimes in the same day or hour! And the goal isn’t to eliminate any of them. We need all three. We need Tamas to rest. We need Rajas to get things done. But to feel truly balanced and well? We aim to cultivate a little more Sattva.

Sattva is that sweet spot where we live in alignment, are clear in thought, light in heart, and steady in spirit.

Yoga as the Great Rebalancer

The beauty of yoga is that it works on the Gunas directly. It shakes us out of Tamas (that stuck, heavy energy), tempers the excess of Rajas (that constant go-go-go), and invites in more Sattva through mindful movement, breath, and presence.

Even your choice of class can be a way to balance the Gunas:

  • Feeling sluggish? A gentle, energising flow might lift the fog (lightly balancing Tamas). Think - Wednesday or Friday Rhythm Flow class, or Thursday Ebb and Flow session or Sundays Ripples of Being class.
  • Feeling scattered or overstimulated? A slow Yin or Nidra session might soothe the nervous system and soften the Rajas.
  • Want more clarity and focus? Meditation, breathwork, or time in nature can all dial up the Sattva.

And honestly? Sometimes, just pausing to notice where you are energetically is the most sattvic thing you can do.

Take a moment and breathe. Tune in to your surroundings. Let go.

A Little Practice for the Week

This week, maybe try this: When you’re feeling out of sorts or off-kilter, instead of asking “What’s wrong with me?”, try asking:

“Which Guna is showing up right now?” And from there, how can I support myself back to balance?

It’s not about fixing or forcing. It’s about becoming aware. And from awareness, we gain the power to shift gently toward more clarity, more calm, and more fluidity.

Restorative Yoga Workshop

Your beloved 2 hours of restorative yoga is back on the last Sunday of June Yay!

Restorative yoga is a completely different experience from most other styles of yoga. Restorative yoga is a restful practice that is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching. If you take a restorative class, you may hardly move at all, doing just a few postures over the course of the session. It is a practice of deep relaxation that emphasises the meditative aspect of yoga, the union of body and mind. Through the use of props for support, many of the postures are held almost effortlessly.

Head here to book your sessions and join Tash for a restful evening of deep relaxation.

AND due to popular demand, I've scheduled another Sound Bath for the last Sunday of July!!!!
