Your Yogi Note: Karma Yoga - The Path of Selfless Action

"Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world."
Desmond Tutu

Hey lovely,

Here we are! The final path in our little journey through the four yogic ways.

We’ve opened the heart with Bhakti. We’ve explored inner wisdom with Jnana. We’ve cultivated stillness with Raja.

Now we arrive at Karma Yoga - the path of action.

But not just any action.

Conscious action. Selfless action. Action without attachment.

And honestly? This might be the most practical yoga of all.

What Is Karma Yoga?

The word karma simply means action. Not fate. Not punishment. Not cosmic revenge. Just… action.

Karma Yoga is the practice of doing what needs to be done with integrity, presence, and heart - without clinging to the outcome.

It’s showing up fully… and then letting go.

It’s giving your best without obsessing over whether it’s applauded. It’s offering kindness without expecting it back. It’s doing the right thing because it aligns with your values, not because it benefits your ego.

And in a world that constantly measures success by results, that’s quietly radical.

Karma Yoga in Everyday Life

You practice Karma Yoga more often than you realise.

It’s there when:

🧘‍♀️ You teach a class wholeheartedly, even if only a few people attend. 🙏 You stack the yoga props neatly for the next person. 😉 You help someone without announcing it. 🐚 You listen deeply without needing to fix. 🧎‍♀️ You show up for your family, your community, your work, even when you’re tired.

It’s service. But not martyrdom. Its contribution. But not depletion.

Karma Yoga doesn’t mean sacrificing yourself. It means acting from alignment rather than attachment.

When I did my yoga certification, we had to spend a day of service at the St Francis Retreat Centre in Hillsborough, weeding the garden and cleaning the windows as part of our Karma Yoga practice. It was a lovely and very special day that I will never forget.

The Art of Letting Go of the Outcome

This is the tricky part.

We live in a results-driven culture. We want feedback. Praise. Progress. Proof.

But Karma Yoga gently reminds us:

You are responsible for your effort. You are not responsible for the universe’s response.

You plant the seed. You water it. But you cannot force it to bloom on your timeline.

There’s something incredibly freeing about that.

When we release attachment to outcomes, we soften. We become lighter. We act with clarity rather than anxiety.

Karma Yoga on the Mat

On your mat, Karma Yoga might look like:

🧘‍♀️ Practicing even when you’re not chasing a “goal pose.” 🧘‍♀️ Moving with care rather than competition. 🧘‍♀️ Showing up consistently without needing dramatic transformation. 🧘‍♀️ Leaving class feeling nourished rather than accomplished.

It’s doing the practice for the love of it, not for the Instagram moment.

The Ripple Effect

Here’s the beautiful part: when you act from presence and integrity, the ripple spreads further than you’ll ever know.

A kind word shifts someone’s day. A calm response de-escalates tension. A grounded teacher creates a grounded room. A mindful action shifts the energy of a space.

Karma Yoga reminds us that we are always shaping the world through how we show up.

And that is both humbling and empowering.

More recently (a couple of weekends ago) my partner and I went plogging, basically picking up trash as you walk.

This all started a while back when we were walking through Cornwallis beach, and a group of people had just dumped several big black trash bags of their BBQ scraps and whatnot all over the place instead of taking them home.

My partner, being the awesome human that he is, grabbed all the bags and put them in our car to take home and dispose of, which then led me to tell him about the Swedish movement of plogging.

He got super excited about this, and since then we always have two of those metal pick-up/claw stick thingies, a roll of trash bags, and rubber gloves in his car so that we can consciously collect trash on our walks.

If you don't know what plogging is ... From Wikipedia - Plogging is the activity of picking up litter while jogging. It started as an organised activity in Sweden around 2016 (the first part of the name deriving from the Swedish verb plocka upp, to pick up) and spread to other countries in 2018, following increased concern about plastic pollution. As a workout, it provides variation in body movements by adding bending, squatting and stretching to the main action of running, hiking, or walking. An estimated 2,000,000 people plog daily in 100 countries and some plogging events have attracted over 3,000,000 participants.

It is most definitely a workout; we were sore for days after. 🤣 But it was worth it. Even if it was disgusting seeing what people will just casually discard out in public spaces.

So this week, maybe ask yourself:

“What would it look like to act from love and release the rest?”

Do the thing. Offer your heart. Then exhale.

The rest is not yours to carry.
