"The real teacher is inside. Everything you seek is already within you."
— Sri Ramana Maharshi
Hey lovely,
After sinking deeply into the heart-opening sweetness of Bhakti Yoga last week, I thought we could wander together into a different kind of intimacy, the intimacy of knowing yourself.
This week, we explore Jnana Yoga, the path of wisdom, inquiry, and insight. But don’t worry, this isn’t the kind of wisdom you memorise, study, or force. It’s the kind that gently rises from within when you finally sit still long enough to hear it.
Jnana Yoga asks one simple but profound question:
“Who am I… really?”
And it invites us to peel back the layers to find out.
What Is Jnana Yoga?
Jnana (pronounced gyah-nah) means “knowledge,” but not the kind you get from textbooks or theories. This is self-knowledge, the kind that reveals your true nature beneath the noise of life, expectations, conditioning, and the various roles we play.
It’s not about becoming someone new, it’s about remembering who you’ve always been.
If Bhakti is the path of the heart, Jnana is the path of clarity.
It’s the yoga of truth, discernment, insight, and awareness.
Jnana in Everyday Life
Even if you’ve never studied philosophy, you’ve likely practised Jnana Yoga without realising it.
It happens when:
You pause before reacting and ask yourself what’s really going on.
You notice your patterns instead of repeating them.
You question old beliefs that no longer feel true.
You speak from intuition rather than impulse.
You catch a moment of pure clarity, an “aha” that feels like a deep exhale.
Jnana Yoga is less about gaining knowledge and more about shedding what isn’t you.
The Practice: Svadhyaya - Self-Study
The heart of Jnana Yoga is svadhyaya, self-inquiry. But this doesn’t mean overthinking or self-criticism. It means observing yourself with compassion and curiosity, like:
- What beliefs am I carrying that don’t belong to me anymore?
- What truth is trying to get my attention?
- What assumptions am I ready to let go of?
- Where am I acting from fear rather than clarity?
Jnana Yoga encourages us to become lifelong students of our own inner landscape.
Jnana on the Mat
This path shows up beautifully in physical practice.
You’re practising Jnana Yoga when you:
🧘♀️ Notice the difference between discomfort and pain.
🧘♀️ Recognise when ego is pushing you further than you need to go.
🧘♀️ Adjust a pose intuitively because you know your body.
🧘♀️ Choose rest instead of forcing.
Your mat becomes a mirror, reflecting your tendencies, your edges, your truth.
The Lightness of Insight
Here’s the funny thing about wisdom: It often doesn’t arrive loudly. It arrives softly, in the pause, the breath, the still moment when everything settles.
And when it comes, it’s not about intellectual knowing. It’s the kind of knowing that feels like coming home.
So this week, let yourself become curious. Notice. Reflect gently. Ask questions without needing immediate answers.
Let your inner teacher speak. 🙏
